“Harriet” Star Cynthia Erivo Nominated for Golden Globe Awards

British-Nigerian Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo has been nominated for the Golden Globe awards for her outstanding role in the film “Harriet.”

She is nominated for two award categories, one for “Best Performance by an Actress In a Motion Picture—Drama,” as well as” Best Original Song” for ‘Stand Up.” Her nomination is in recognition of her outstanding portrayal of abolitionist leader Harriet Tubman in the film “Harriet” and for the film’s original song “Stand Up.”

Engaging the media shortly after the nomination, Erivo praised the film for reviving the personality and legacy of Harriet Tubman and given it practical expression. “Finally, we get to see her. “I think she’s been a picture for so long or a monument. Our history books don’t really talk about her life. She’s almost a paragraph and only a paragraph. Now we get to at least have an image. We get to know a little bit more of who she was as a person. Hopefully what that will do is encourage more storytellers to tell her story again and again,” she said. She also disclosed that “Stand Up” is meant to give people who have been treated unjustly the motivation and strength to fight back.

“I wanted to re-encourage people to know that we have a responsibility to fight just like she did. I wanted people to know that the work that she did was special and important. I wanted to pay homage to who she was and what she had done and the legacy she had left behind which is probably why it ends with the line ‘I go to prepare a place for you’ which was her final line before she passed away, ” Erivo revealed.

Since its release in September, “Harriet” has been a commercial success, making US$40.1 million so far at the box office.
