NBA Legend Michael Jordan Inaugurates Clinic for the Underprivileged.
Six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan has inaugurated the first of two new medical clinics he is funding. Situated in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinic will provide medical care for uninsured and underinsured residents in the area.
At a ceremony held to officially open the facility to the public, the NBA legend said the project “is a very emotional thing” that he had intended to give back to a community that has supported him over the years. “I stand here before you as a proud parent, son, and obviously a member of this community. You see my name, but yet you see a lot of people behind me, and the commitment, especially from my mom, about caring for other people and being a part of a community, matters,” he said.
The Clinic is expected to provide primary health care services and facilities for social workers, behavioral health experts, oral health practitioners, and therapists to work on delivering quality health care to the community.
Over the years, the 56-year old has shored up his philanthropy, running the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational charity golf tournament. He has contributed about $750,000 to Novant Health Community Care Cruiser which provides immunization to underserved youths. A substantial part of his charity has been invested in literacy efforts in the low-income neighborhoods of Charlotte.
Together with a second facility yet to be opened, the new clinics are expected to serve more than 35,000 children and adults over the next five years.
