South Africa shuts down diplomatic missions in Nigeria
South Africa is shutting down its diplomatic missions in Nigeria after a series of reprisal attacks on South African businesses. The South African Foreign Ministry spokesman says “After receiving reports and threats from some of the Nigerians we decided to temporarily close while we are assessing the situation.”
The decision means that South African diplomatic services in Abuja and Lagos will be closed to the public. Nigeria has also recalled its ambassador on South Africa as pressures pile on South African authorities to weed out the violence. In the meantime, Nigerian airliner Air Peace is evacuating Nigerians willing to return home at no cost.
