Cajou Creamery, a plant-based handcrafted ice cream brand founded by Chef Dwight Campbell and his wife Nicole Foster, is now shipping its products nationwide. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, they are the nation’s fastest-growing Black-owned dairy-free ice cream brand with exotic flavors like baklava, Mexican cacao, and sweet potato pie.
Dwight Campbell and Nicole, who is a public health attorney, started experimenting on dairy-free ice cream for their two children who love ice cream but couldn’t really enjoy it because they are lactose-intolerant.
What started as a hobby at home turned into a thriving business in 2018. They expanded their menu and began offered unique flavors such as baklava, kulfi, Mexican cacao, cortadito, horchata, sweet potato pie, and blueberry cheesecake. All of their products are handmade from scratch with the best high-quality ingredients that are healthy, chemical-free, dairy-free, and plant-based.
“People hear vegan or plant-based and think ick, like they are dirty words,” Nicole told Thrillist. “Or a common story we hear is, ‘I haven’t had ice cream in 20 years,’ and we are able to give them that experience. We hope people can connect to whole foods again and feel the joy that we put into making the product.”
Their products are sold in more than 35 stores and farmer’s market stands throughout Maryland and D.C. The ice cream can also be delivered straight to your doorstep by ordering through their online store. Moreover, they are set to open their first ice cream cafe in Baltimore, Maryland this year.
