Sudan’s transition to democracy is set in motion as the head of the Transitional Military Council (TMC), Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan is sworn in as leader of the newly-constituted Sovereign Council.

In accordance with a power-sharing deal signed on Saturday, Lt.-Gen Burhan will preside over the Sovereign Council for a period of 21 months before handing over to a civilian head to lead the country into elections in 2022. A civilian-nominated Prime Minister is due to be sworn in later, while key cabinet positions like interior and defence are reserved for appointment by the military.

The implementation of the transition plan is hailed by protestors as a victory for democracy, even as they prepare for life under a new government post-Bashir.
